A review of smoking amongst young people The tobacco industry has lured young people to start smoking by its advertising; they are unaware of the harmful risks that come about from smoking and the complications that arise. As for the industry the main goal is to make money; the value of the tobacco industry makes about 12.1 billion a year and around 66,000 jobs or more are linked to this industry. Young people are regularly exposed to these messages and therefore they’re persuaded to take up smoking as the media promote it as something fun and adventurous. About 70% of the population are young smokers. The youth see smoking as a means of relaxing, relieving stress and fitting in with the crowd. It’s almost regarded a as fashion statement. It’s an activity which is widely associated and makes them feel more mature however they do not realise the significant health impacts of trying to fit into society can lead to. Smoking has become a very common habit amongst young people as they see at as a way of fitting into their social network of friends. This attitude and behaviour linked to smoking is costing the NHS around 5 billion a year- treating smoking related conditions etc. It is estimated that 207,000 young adolescents start smoking every year. From the population of adults smokers 2/3 started before the age of 18. Smoking generally starts at an early age and then they become addicted and they carry on smoking through adulthood.
